It’s no coincidence that carobs are considered the “Black Gold” of our island. The Carob Tree originates from the Mediterranean region, which Cyprus is the heart of, and has been cultivated for the better part of four thousand years. The yields from Carob Trees have been one of the largest and most successful agricultural exports of Cyprus since the middle ages. The Carob Tree, locally known as “Teratsia”, is so intertwined with the Cypriot identity that it is deeply integrated in our unique dilect and we even have a saint, Saint George the Teratsiotis, named after it.
